These handcrafted figures serve as symbols, representing the beauty in imperfections often overlooked by designers and consumers alike. By introducing toys that defy this stigma, Crater Labs inspire both children and adults to embrace the unique qualities that make us who we are.
The pursuit of flawlessness can become an overwhelming force that impedes acceptance and genuine personal development.
As I neared the end of my university education, I found myself searching for my purpose and place in the world.
Am I a good designer?
Do I fit in with my peers?
Do I look good?
The uncertainty of the future instilled a deep fear within me, yet my only solace came from garnering approval from not only my professors, but also my peers, friends, family, and even strangers. I was among the multitude who subconsciously yearned to be universally liked—effortlessly agreeable, well-mannered, and eager to please.
I harbored this frustration for not having it everything figured out, and sought to create a project that responded to this all-too-familiar pressure to appease the world.
I conducted online Q&As about the role models and idols of participants aged 8 to 52, both in their childhood and adulthood. It came as no surprise that many recounted idolizing iconic figures such as Barbie, Victoria's Secret Angels, and various celebrities known for their slim physiques and flawless appearances. I also inquired about their body image and self-esteem, receiving responses that resonated with many.

It's a familiar reality that we often assess both individuals and products based on their aesthetic beauty. However, as a designer, my mission transcends superficial judgments. I aim to shine a light on the craftsmanship and dedication behind each creation, advocating for a culture that celebrates our imperfections as a testament to our humanity.
In this project, my goal was to create something truly unique and special by employing the process of handcrafting. By utilizing scraps of clay with natural chunks and grains, I can incorporate the beautiful imperfections of handmade goods.
Through my own flawed human eye, I aimed to create a toy that mimics the look of a mass-produced item but with a truly one-of-a-kind feel. Every bump and dent adds to the charm and character of this imperfect creation. This project represents a labor of love toward embracing the beauty of imperfection and celebrating the art of handcrafted items.
This project embodies the ongoing mental challenges I confront daily. Throughout my life perfectionism has consumed me in every task I undertook. However, this project compelled me to delve deeper beyond the superficial notion of producing a flawless product. It urged me to recognize the value in the time and dedication invested in creation. Crater Labs is an concept where artistry intertwined with human imperfections is not only inevitable but also adds depth and authenticity to the creative process.
